June is upon us and that means sweet summer smells, late sunsets and early mornings, and a calendar full of adventure activities. It’s a special time of year where mountain bike trails beckon its users, snow can still be found on the mountains, and the possibilities for endeavors are endless. And whether you are participating in an adventure race this month, or spectating at a professional disc golf tournament, June is the kickoff for summer and there is plenty of fun things to choose from. High Sierra All Out 24, Saint Luis Obispo, California, June 6-7
Either solo racers or relay teams can tackle the High Sierra All Out 24 this year, and whether you go about it alone or with a team of friends, one thing is guaranteed for this epic race; you will see some amazing scenery. That’s because the High Sierra All Out 24 takes you from the mountains to the desserts and showcases the extreme diversity that California and the Sierra Mountains has to offer. NOLS Alaska Backpacking Course, NOLS Alaska, Multiple Dates
Tired of the same old boring classroom routine? Spice up your life with some outdoor education from the leader in outdoor skills; the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Participants in any NOLS classes (which are offered for teens and adults) will learn valuable skills on how to survive and thrive in the outdoors, lending to promising careers as an outdoor guide or lifetimes of safe wilderness exploring. NOLS Alaska Backpacking Course is offered throughout the month of June and includes a month of backpacking, learning, and eventually self-supporting yourself in the wild Alaska environment. PedalFest, Coburn, Pennsylvania, June 12-June 14
Head on over to Pennsylvania this month to check out PedalFest, a three day camping experience that celebrates everything the biking culture has to offer. Included with your $150 registration is two nights camping, all meals provided from a local source, and guided mountain and road bike tours to get the best insight on everything Pennsylvania has to offer. Closing Day @ Arapahoe Basin, Summit County, Colorado, June 14
That is correct, one amazing event happening in June is still skiing. That’s because Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin) has the longest ski season of any continental U.S. ski resorts. The snow is still falling at A-Basin and spring skiing is in full swing. The mountain expects its last day to land in the middle of the month, but may extend longer, making for June to be a great time to hit the slopes one last time before summer strikes. And even if you are not a skier, with the celebratory atmosphere at A-Basin, it’s a great time for anyone to head up to the mountain.
Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half, Leadville, Colorado, June 20
Within the running world Leadville is most famous for the side-splitting Leadville 100 trail race, and to give you a taste of the action, the Leadville Trail Marathon this month will give you an example of what it means to go the distance in Leadville. Reaching a top elevation of over 13,000 feet, it is recommended to acclimate a bit before coming to the race if you’re traveling from sea-level, and even if you have grown up near the high elevations of the Rocky Mountains all of your life, training will absolutely be necessary for this heavy hitting trail marathon. Take yourself back to childhood when those inflatable slides entertained you for an afternoon of fun and take part in the insane inflatable 5K travelling across the country. The Maple Hill Open presented by Vibram is just another indicator that the sport of Frisbee Golf is growing up across the country. This premier event is a Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) National Tour event which means the best of the best of pros and amateurs alike will be teeing off and going for gold in the beautiful Leicester, Massachusetts. Just as great of a spectator sport as any, anyone who goes to the event is welcome to participate in the many other mini-competitions taking place at the Maple Hill Open including a longest drive contest, putting contest, and even a table tennis tournament. Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, Cañon City, Colorado, June 26–27
Boats, bands, and beer; do we need to say more? The Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival is just one of many whitewater celebrations happening this summer and does well to incorporate the lifestyle of whitewater enthusiasts into its two day festival. Taking place on the Arkansas River, this festival will feature competitions, live music, food and drink, and enough family fun to shake a paddle at. And with proceeds going towards the expansion of the Cañon City Whitewater Park, this festival is a win-win situation for every boater that uses this amazing facility.
Climb4Life Boulder, Boulder, Colorado, June 27
With an aim to eliminate ovarian cancer, the Climb4Life event happening at the end of this month in Boulder, Colorado is a fundraising festival that not only raises money for cancer research, but celebrates healthy lifestyles by promoting active living. Featuring rock climbing, bouldering, and yoga clinics, even if you don’t consider yourself a climber, the guided hikes that are offered makes this one event that everyone can still put on their calendar.
