Review: OluKai Holomua

To start this review, first off I’d like to say that I’m not a big sandal guy. I own several pairs of sandals but I don’t wear them often for various reasons. Here’s why I converted.

Functionality ★★★★★
Again, I’m not a flip flop guy but OluKai Holuma is the first open backed sandal I’ve worn that actually stays on my foot. The footbed is molded so they feel broken in from the moment you take them out of the box and the straps on the sides allow you to adjust tension to the sandal in case you need to play an impromptu game of soccer. If Hawaii had a military, these would be their combat boots. In all seriousness though, every Hawaii lifeguard is issued a pair.

Design and Aesthetics ★★★★★
Personally, I think that the image speaks for itself. These sandals look sweet, which isn’t something I say too often. Everything from the subtle outline of Hawaii on the side to the metal buckle on the front (which we discovered can also be used as a bottle opener) just oozes awesome.

Durability ★★★★★
These are the standard issue to Hawaiian lifeguards so they’re designed to take a beating. Lifeguards in Hawaii face all sorts of terrain and the last thing they want to be thinking about is their sandals falling off in the water because they’re too loose. In that sense, these sandals are very well thought through.

Value
The only down side to these sandals is their price. Ninety dollars is premium pricing for flip flops and kudos for Olukai for making a sandal that’s worth that much. My thoughts: these sandals are worth every penny.
