Review: REI Half Dome 2
Functionality ★★★★
The REI Half Dome functions perfectly in all three seasons and stands up to wind and rain. Though not built for minimalist multi-day backpacking adventures, this 5lb 2oz tent is fairly lightweight and perfect for primitive or site camping excursions and backpacking when you don’t mind carrying a little extra weight. The poles are color-coded for convenient assembly and the easy-attach rainfly is excellent for blocking the elements.
Design and Aesthetics ★★★★
With two side doors and vestibules, there will be no crawling over one another to get in or out of the tent and no mixing of gear or cramped limbs. Coming in vibrant orange, red, and green, this tent is sharp looking and says that you are serious about the outdoors without being spendy.
Durability ★★★★
Both the rainfly and tent are built to hold-up and, if taken care of properly, should last for many years. The polyester rain fly is strong and guards against rips. The tent’s poles are remarkably flexible yet strong and will not break under reasonable pressure. To get the most life out of your tent, consider investing in the Half Dome 2 Footprint, which will protect the floor and extend the life of your tent. Making sure to dry-off, air out, and wipe down this tent after each use is the key to its longevity.
Value ★★★★★
For $189.00 this tent is a great value. Many over zealous campers will mistakenly spend upwards of $300-$400 on 3 or 4 season tents. In truth, unless you are a serious alpinist who plans on camping at very high altitudes, in inclement weather, and in the winter, this tent will be more than adequate. The Foot Print is priced at a low $29.50 and completely worth the extra to ensure a long life for your tent.
