REVIEW: Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket
As a backpacker and camper, sometimes a sleeping bag can be overkill. A lightweight and comfortable quilt can be a much better option during the warmer months. But, as it turns out, that same quilt can be just as handy when gathering around the fire pit in the backyard, going RV camping, or even just lounging on the couch.
That’s precisely the kind of versatility you get from the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket, a cozy quilt that you’ll want to take with you everywhere. Like the puffy jackets from which it draws its name, the Original Puffy Blanket uses ripstop polyester fabrics for its exterior and synthetic down-like insulation on the inside. The result is a warm comforter that feels like you’re wrapping up in your favorite down jacket.
Unlike your sleeping bag, which usually gets stored in a gear closet when not in use, you’ll always want to keep the Rumpl close at hand. In addition to making an excellent comforter for everyday use, the Original Puffy Blanket compresses down to a surprisingly small size, thanks to its included stuff sack. Keep it on the couch, throw it in your car or camper, cram it into your backpack—wherever you go, you’re going to want this blanket to follow.
Comfort (5) ★★★★★
If it wasn’t apparent enough already, the Original Puffy Blanket is incredibly comfortable. The materials used to make this comforter are warm and soft yet breathable and light at the same time. That makes this the ultimate blanket for relaxing nights at home, as well as warm-weather camping trips where a sleeping bag can be too stuffy and confining. It is an especially great option for hammock campers looking for a bit of extra warmth without adding much in the way of weight.
Design (5) ★★★★★
Rumpl offers the Original Puffy Blanket—and all of its other blankets—in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Options include everything from bright and playful designs to more subtle color combinations. The number of options are so impressive that chances are, no matter which way your personal preferences lean, you’ll find at least one design that appeals to you.
Most of the blankets are available in two sizes—a smaller version made for one and a larger model for couples. Even if you’re flying solo, the extra space that the two-person model offers enhances the comfort, without adding much in the way of weight or bulk. It does cost twice as much ($99 vs. $199), but the additional real estate makes it worth it.
Durability (5) ★★★★★
As you would expect with a puffy jacket, the Original Puffy Blanket is built for use in the outdoors. As such, the ripstop fabrics that make up its outer shell are highly resistant to tears, scuffs, and snags. Those same materials have been treated with a DWR (durable water-repelant) coating, that allows the blanket to resist moisture and stains. This provides a nice sense of confidence when traveling with the Original Puffy, which can absorb just about any kind of punishment you throw at it.
And should it get a little dirty while accompanying you on your adventures, just throw the blanket in the wash. Afterwards, it will probably look like it did when it was brand new.
Overall (5)
The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket is one of those outstanding products that you don’t realize you need until you have one. Its versatility and comfort are sure to make it one of your favorite pieces of gear, whether you’re using it at home, while traveling, or at a campsite. We love how compressible it is, which makes packing it in a suitcase or backpack a breeze. Most of all, it is just incredibly warm and comfortable, performing above and beyond what we would expect for a comforter or outdoor quilt.
