Review: Super.Natural Base Layer
Functionality ★★★★★
When the Super.Natural Base Layer showed up in the office, one of the first things I noticed was its “odor resistant” claims. Sure it’s made of 48 percent anti-stinking merino wool but I was confident I could make this garment stink like my pits. So I decided to put this claim to the test.
My boss put it on on Monday and said he wasn’t going to take it off until next Monday. Not only did he keep this promise, he also went running every day.
The following Monday, as I walked into the office, I was greeted with, “Josh, smell this!” only to turn around and find a black shirt fly into my face. I sense even the slightest hint of odor. We were both impressed that it stood up to the “Yoon test.”
The Super.Natural base layer is not only stink proof, it’s also lightweight and breathable.
Design and Aesthetics ★★★★
At first glance, this base layer, like many, seems very plain and boring, but if you take the time to look at the technology, you might be pleasantly surprised. The fibers shed odors so you don’t scare people off after wearing it for a week straight. Super.Natural uses a combination of Merino Wool, Polyester and Lycra to create a durable, stretchy, yet moisture wicking fabric.
Durability ★★★★
It feels like a thin athletic t-shirt and I was worried about it ripping over time but was pleasantly surprised by how well it held up especially after the week long torture test that we put it through.
I was expecting to see some sort of wear but merino is a tough natural fabric and even after a wash, they still look like I pulled them out of the box. It’s also worth mentioning that Super.Natural didn’t sacrifice comfort for durability. I have worn base layers that a bit softer but hey, merino is coarser than cashmere. That’s just how it is.
Value ★★★★★
While other base layers of this caliber can cost upwards of $80, the Super.Natural Base layer comes in at $60 for the top and $50 for the tights. Considering how versatile this base layer is, it’s actually a really good deal. Most people want more than one base layer since you know, most people don’t ski for just one day. With the Super.Natural base layer, you can wear the same layer for the whole trip.
